Russia-Ukraine war: Day 64 of the invasion

 

  • Russia’s foreign ministry has issued a stern warning to western countries in response to Ukraine’s encouragement to strike within Russian territory. “Further provocation prompting Ukraine to strike against Russian facilities will be met with a harsh response,” said the spokesperson, Maria Zakharova.
  • Vladimir Putin warns against Western intervention in Ukraine; Liz Truss says the conflict must serve as a “catalyst for change”; and António Guterres visits Kyiv.
  • While Ukrainian presidential aide Mykhailo Podolyak has defended Ukraine’s right to strike within Russia, he has stated that “Ukraine will defend itself in any way, including strikes on the warehouses and bases of the killers in Russia.” This is a right recognised throughout the world.”
  • According to Russian state media, the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, which Russia claims to have captured, will begin using the rouble on May 1.
  • Ben Wallace, the UK defence secretary, has reiterated that it is legal for Ukraine to target logistics infrastructure on Russian territory, saying: “If Ukraine did choose to target logistics infrastructure for the Russian army, that would be legal under international law.”
  • Wallace also suggested that the UK would provide Ukraine with weaponry capable of striking Russian naval forces in the Black Sea. Despite “embarrassing losses,” Russia’s Black Sea fleet retains the ability to strike Ukrainian and coastal targets, according to Britain’s defence ministry’s latest intelligence report.
  • Russia’s defence ministry said its missiles struck four Ukrainian military targets overnight, destroying two missile and ammunition depots near the eastern Ukrainian settlements of Barvinkove and Ivanivka.
  • Andriy Herus, the head of Ukraine’s parliament’s energy committee, has attempted to reassure the country that energy supplies are secure for the summer.
  • António Guterres, the UN Secretary General, is in Ukraine and has visited Borodianka to see the devastation.
  • As reports of rape following the Russian invasion continue to rise, efforts are being made to get emergency contraception into Ukrainian hospitals as soon as possible.
  • According to Ukraine’s prosecutor’s office, more than 8,500 alleged war crimes committed by Russian troops in Ukraine are being investigated.

Sri Lanka is running out of gasoline
